BACKGROUND: The quality of communication in oncology significantly impacts patients' health outcomes, as poor communication increases the risk of unnecessary treatment, inadequate pain relief, higher anxiety levels, and acute hospitalizations. Additionally, ineffective communication skills training (CST) is associated with stress, low job satisfaction, and burnout among doctors working in oncology. While acknowledging the importance of effective communication, the specific features of successful CST remain uncertain. Role-play and recorded consultations with direct feedback appear promising for CST but may be time-consuming and face challenges in transferring acquired skills to clinical contexts. Our aim is to bridge this gap by proposing a novel approach: On-site Supportive Communication Training (On-site SCT). The concept integrates knowledge from previous studies but represents the first randomized controlled trial employing actual doctor-patient interactions during CST. METHODS: This randomized multicenter trial is conducted at three departments of oncology in Denmark. Doctors are randomized 1:1 to the intervention and control groups. The intervention group involves participation in three full days of On-site SCT facilitated by a trained psychologist. On-site SCT focuses on imparting communication techniques, establishing a reflective learning environment, and offering emotional support with a compassionate mindset. The primary endpoint is the change in percentage of items rated "excellent" by the patients in the validated 15-item questionnaire Communication Assessment Tool. The secondary endpoints are changes in doctors' ratings of self-efficacy in health communication, burnout, and job satisfaction measured by validated questionnaires. Qualitative interviews will be conducted with the doctors after the intervention to evaluate its relevance, feasibility, and working mechanisms. Doctors have been actively recruited during summer/autumn 2023. Baseline questionnaires from patients have been collected. Recruitment of new patients for evaluation questionnaires is scheduled for Q1-Q2 2024. DISCUSSION: This trial aims to quantify On-site SCT efficacy. If it significantly impacts patients/doctors, it can be a scalable CST concept for clinical practice. Additionally, qualitative interviews will reveal doctors' insight into the most comprehensible curriculum parts. TRIAL REGISTRATION: April 2023 - ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT05842083). OBJECTIVE: Effective mentorship plays a crucial role in the professional development of surgical residents by providing guidance, support, networking, and facilitating personal, and career growth. This is particularly significant for female and underrepresented minority residents who often encounter additional challenges due to discrimination and historical lack of representation. Our objective is to present a framework for structuring a progressive and inclusive formal mentorship program- Surgery IMPACT- which embodies a panoramic perspective of surgery residency. DESIGN: A holistic mentorship program was created through the conceptualization of WISE Domains (Work-Life Balance, Interpersonal and cultural proficiency, Scholarly and career advancement, Effective learning and study techniques). Mentor-Mentee partnerships were created between current surgical faculty and general surgery residents. The foundation of the program is built upon four essential mentor roles: Core faculty mentor, research mentor, fellowship mentor, alongside a concurrent incorporation of peer mentorship. Over the academic year, we encouraged at least 3 formal mentorship meeting prefaced by a reflective exercise by the residents. CONCLUSIONS: The implementation of Surgery IMPACT has been successful in formalizing mentorship opportunities at our institution. By incorporating WISE domains, structured meeting centered on well-defined objectives, we have effectively created an all-inclusive mentorship program to foster resident growth and equal opportunities. Our ongoing commitment is to further refine and expand this innovative program with the aspiration of galvanizing similar mentorship models across diverse surgical programs.

Background: Medical health practitioners, particularly those working in cancer units, are vulnerable to poor psychological outcomes. The present study was designed to examine the influence of workplace bullying on the mental health of medical and paramedical staff by testing workplace burnout as a mediating factor. Methods: Utilizing a cross-sectional survey, 220 Muslim medical staff officers from the cancer units of three hospitals in Lahore, Pakistan, were assessed for workplace bullying, mental health, and workplace burnout using the standardized psychometric measures (i.e., Negative Act Questionnaire; Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale; and Maslach Burnout Inventory). Data were collected from 2019-2020. Results: Workplace bullying and workplace burnout were directly related to mental health problems, including depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms. Moreover, workplace burnout significantly mediated the paths between workplace bullying and mental health (i.e., depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms), suggesting that workplace burnout increases vulnerability to other mental health issues. Conclusion: A need for counseling and suitable management strategies to support medical staff working in cancer units is required.

INTRODUCTION: Optimizing operating room (OR) scheduling accuracy is important for OR efficiency, meeting patient expectations, and maximizing value for health systems. However, limited data exist on factors influencing the precision of Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA) OR scheduling. This study aims to identify the factors influencing the accuracy of OR scheduling for THA. METHODS: A retrospective review of 6,072 THA (5,579 primary THA and 493 revision THA) performed between January 2020 and May 2023 at an urban, academic institution was conducted. We collected baseline patient characteristics, surgeon years of experience, and compared actual wheels in to wheels out (WIWO) OR time against scheduled OR time. Significant scheduling inaccuracies were defined as actual OR times deviating by at least 15% from scheduled OR times. Logistic regression analyses were employed to assess the impact of patient, surgeon, and intraoperative factors on OR scheduling accuracy. RESULTS: Using adjusted odds ratios, primary THA patients who had a lower BMI and surgeons who had less than 10 years of experience were associated with overestimation of OR time. Whereas, higher BMI, younger age, general anesthesia, non-primary osteoarthritis indications, and afternoon procedure start times were linked to underestimation of OR time. For revision THA, lower BMI and fewer components revised correlated with overestimated OR time. Men, higher BMI, more components revised, septic indication for surgery, and morning procedure start times were associated with underestimation of OR time. CONCLUSION: This study highlights several critical patient, surgeon, and intraoperative factors influencing OR scheduling accuracy for THA. OR scheduling models should consider these factors to enhance OR efficiency.

OBJECTIVE: Physicians face documented challenges to their mental and physical well-being, particularly in the forms of occupational burnout and cardiovascular disease. This study examined the previously under-researched intersection of early life stressors, prolonged occupational stress, and cardiovascular health in physicians. METHODS: Participants were 60 practicing male physicians, 30 with clinical burnout, defined by the Maslach Burnout Inventory, and 30 non-burnout controls. They completed the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Questionnaire asking about abuse, neglect and household dysfunctions before the age of 18, and the Perceived Stress Scale to rate thoughts and feelings about stress in the past month. Endothelium-independent (adenosine challenge) coronary flow reserve (CFR) and endothelium-dependent CFR (cold pressor test) were assessed by positron emission tomography-computed tomography. The segment stenosis score was determined by coronary computed tomography angiography. RESULTS: Twenty-six (43%) participants reported at least one ACE and five (8%) reported ≥4 ACEs. A higher ACEs sum score was associated with lower endothelium-independent CFR (r partial (rp) = -0.347, p = .01) and endothelium-dependent CFR (rp = -0.278, p = .04), adjusting for age, body mass index, perceived stress and segment stenosis score. In exploratory analyses, participants with ≥4 ACEs had lower endothelium-independent CFR (rp = -0.419, p = .001) and endothelium-dependent CFR (rp = -0.278, p = .04), than those with <4 ACEs. Endothelium-dependent CFR was higher in physicians with burnout than in controls (rp = 0.277, p = .04). No significant interaction emerged between burnout and ACEs for CFR. CONCLUSION: The findings suggest an independent association between ACEs and CFR in male physicians and emphasize the nuanced relationship between early life stressors, professional stress, and cardiovascular health.

Research has indicated a negative impact of physical activity on academic burnout among students, however, there is a paucity of evidence about the underlying mechanism of this association in Pakistani students. The present research seeks to investigate the relationship between physical activity and academic burnout by investigating the potential mediating effects of adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MD) and body mass index (BMI). A sample of 596 students using a cross-sectional survey design was gathered from two public universities (Riphah International University and Mohammed Ali Jinnah University) in Rawalpindi, Pakistan from June to July 2022. The study participants were asked to fill out the Physical Activity Rating Scale-3, the Learning Burnout Scale, and the Test of Adherence to MD questionnaires. The study employed descriptive, bivariate, and path analysis through regression utilizing the SPSS software version 27. The findings demonstrated a negative correlation between academic burnout and BMI, physical activity, and adherence to the MD. The relationship between physical activity and academic burnout was mediated by BMI. Physical activity and academic burnout were inversely correlated, with adherence to the MD and BMI interacting as sequential mediators. The outcomes of this research have expanded our knowledge of the association between physical activity and academic burnout and have suggested crucial and appropriate strategies for addressing student academic burnout.

INTRODUCTION: Professional burnout is a syndrome of emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation and low sense of personal achievement related to the workplace. Orthopaedic surgeons train and practise in highly demanding environments. Understanding up-to-date trends in burnout, particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic, is vital. For this reason, we carried out a systematic review on this topic. METHODS: A scoping literature review of two databases was conducted. Two authors independently screened articles and conflicts were resolved by panel discussion. Articles pertaining to orthopaedic surgeons that used validated scales and were peer reviewed research were included. Non-English or abstract-only results were excluded. RESULTS: A total of 664 papers were identified in the literature search and 34 were included in the qualitative review. Among 8,471 orthopaedic surgeons, the mean burnout prevalence was 48.9%. The wide range in rate of burnout between the studies (15-90.4%) reflected the variety in setting, subspecialty and surgeon grade. Common protective factors comprised dedicated mentorship, surgeon seniority, sufficient exercise and family support. Substance abuse, malpractice claims, financial stress and onerous on-call responsibilities were risk factors. Burnout prevalence during the COVID-19 pandemic was not noticeably different; there were a number of pandemic-associated risk and protective factors. CONCLUSIONS: Nearly one in two orthopaedic surgeons are burnt out. There is a paucity of data on the short and long-term impact of COVID-19 on burnout. Burnout has deep organisational, personal and clinical implications. Targeted organisational interventions are required to prevent burnout from irrevocably damaging the future of orthopaedic surgery.

Objective: To investigate the current situation, trending subjects, and future directions in the field of burnout among nurses, and to serve as a resource for researchers conducting related research. Methods: The bibliometric analysis was carried out using R package "bibliometrix", bibliometric online analysis platform (https://bibliometric.com/) and VOSviewer (1.6.18). Results: The leading countries that had a significant impact on this field were the USA and China. University of Pennsylvania was the most influential institution. Journal of Nursing Management was the top productive journal. Critical care, oncology care, acute care, and infectious disease care were more likely to lead to symptoms of burnout among nurses. "Mental health", "job satisfaction", "stress", and "COVID-19" were the current hot topics in this field. Conclusion: Our study not only provides a thorough outline to assist researchers in understanding the leading countries, institutions, journals, and potential collaborators, but it also examines the current and upcoming trends in this field and inspires researchers to select research directions.

The aim of this study was to analyze gender differences in stress-related factors among active teachers. A cross-sectional study was conducted to examine gender disparities in psychological, nutritional, physical activity, and oral health factors and how these habits correlate with stress and burnout in their work environment. The sample comprised 1037 teachers from Spain, Colombia, and Chile, consisting of 40.1% men and 59.9% women, with an average age of 41 years and teaching experience of 11.8 ± 9.2 and 12.2 ± 8.7 years, respectively. They were evaluated using a compilation of questionnaires with the objective of analyzing gender differences in habits that are associated with stress levels in teachers. The findings revealed that men had significantly higher levels of depersonalization and personal accomplishment, whereas women exhibited higher levels of perceived stress and conscientiousness. Regarding nutritional habits, results were more positive for women, and men exhibited healthier functional habits by engaging in more weekly sports. Regarding oral health habits, women had better oral hygiene practices, brushing their teeth more frequently. However, women showed a higher tendency to smoke than their male counterparts. We conclude that there are notable gender differences that can provide insights for developing strategies to enhance the overall well-being of teachers.

The emotional impact of surgical complications on urologists is a significant yet historically under-addressed issue. Traditionally, surgeons have been expected to cope with complications and their psychological effects in silence, perpetuating a culture of perfectionism and 'silent suffering.' This has left many unprepared to handle the emotional toll of adverse events during their training and early careers. Recognizing the gap in structured education on this matter, there is a growing movement to openly address and educate on the emotional consequences of surgical complications. This article underscores the importance of such educational initiatives in the mid-career phase, proposing strategies to promote surgeon health, and psychological safety. It advocates for utilizing Morbidity and Mortality conferences as platforms for peer support, learning from 'near miss' events, and encourages at least annual department-wide discussions to raise awareness and normalize the emotional challenges faced by surgeons. Furthermore, it highlights the role of formal peer support programs, acceptance and commitment therapy, and resilience training as vital tools for promoting surgeon well-being. Resources from various organizations, including the American Urological Association and the American Medical Association, are now available to facilitate these critical conversations. By integrating these resources and encouraging a culture of openness and support, the article suggests that the surgical community can better manage the inevitable emotional ramifications of complications, thereby fostering resilience and reducing burnout among surgeons.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Physician burnout is rampant, and physician retention is increasingly hard. It is unclear how burnout impacts intent to leave an organization. We sought to determine how physician burnout and professional fulfillment impact pediatric physicians' intent to leave (ITL) an organization. DESIGN AND METHODS: We performed 120, 1:1 semi-structured interviews of our pediatric faculty and used the themes therefrom to develop a Likert-scale based, 22-question battery of their current work experience. We created a faculty climate survey by combining those questions with a standardized instrument that assesses burnout and professional fulfillment. We surveyed pediatric and pediatric-affiliated (e.g. pediatric surgery, pediatric psychiatry, etc.) physicians between November 2 and December 9, 2022. We used standard statistical methods to analyze the data. An alpha-level of 0.05 was used to determine significance. RESULTS: A total of 142 respondents completed the survey, 129 (91%) were Department of Pediatrics faculty. Burnout was present in 41% (58/142) of respondents, whereas 30% (42/142) were professionally fulfilled. There was an inverse relationship between professional fulfillment and ITL, p < 0.001 for the trend. Among those who were not professionally fulfilled, the odds ratio of ITL in the next three years was 3.826 [95% CI 1.575-9.291], p = 0.003. There was a direct relationship between burnout and ITL, p < 0.001 for the trend. CONCLUSIONS: Among pediatric physicians, professional fulfillment is strongly, inversely related with ITL in the next three years. Similarly, burnout is directly related with ITL. These data suggest a lack of professional fulfillment and high burnout are strong predictors of pediatric physician turnover.

Com objetivo de verificar a prevalência da SB entre acadêmicos e correlacionar essa variável com aspectos sociodemográficos e de saúde, esse estudo transversal foi conduzido com uma amostra composta por 72 participantes. O protocolo de avaliação foi composto por um questionário sociodemográfico, avaliação da Síndrome de Burnout, de sintomas depressivos, saúde geral, aspectos sociais e sintomas osteomusculares. A correlação de Spearman foi utilizada para análise estatística. Houve predomínio da SB entre a amostra (65,2%). Observou-se correlações significativas entre aspectos sociais e descrença (p=0.016; r=-0.283), eficácia estudantil (p=<0.001; r=-0.399) e sintomas depressivos (p=<0.001; r=-0.547), bem como entre a saúde geral e sintomas depressivos (p=0.012; r=-0.295). Estabelecer esse tipo de medida permite planejar ações voltadas à assistência estudantil, priorizando intervenções e práticas preventivas que colaborem com a promoção da saúde no ambiente universitário.


Despite being predominant in the workplace, Burnout Syndrome (BS) is becoming more and more frequent in the university environment. With the objective of verifying the prevalence of BS among students and correlating this variable with sociodemographic and health aspects, this cross-sectional study was conducted with a sample of 72 participants. The evaluation protocol consisted of a sociodemographic questionnaire, evaluation of Burnout Syndrome, depressive symptoms, general health, social aspects, and musculoskeletal symptoms. Spearman's correlation was used for statistical analysis. There was a predominance of BS among the sample (65.2%). Significant correlations were observed between social aspects and disbelief (p=0.016; r=-0.283), student efficacy (p=<0.001; r=-0.399) and depressive symptoms (p=<0.001; r=-0.547), as well as between general health and depressive symptoms (p=0.012; r=-0.295). Establishing this type of measure allows planning actions aimed at student assistance, prioritizing interventions and preventive practices that collaborate with health promotion in the university environment.


A pesar de ser prevalente en el ámbito laboral, el Síndrome de Burnout (SB) es cada vez más frecuente en el ámbito universitario. Con el objetivo de verificar la prevalencia de SB entre los estudiantes y correlacionar esta variable con aspectos sociodemográficos y de salud, este estudio transversal se realizó con una muestra de 72 participantes. El protocolo de evaluación consistió en un cuestionario sociodemográfico, evaluación del Síndrome de Burnout, síntomas depresivos, salud general, aspectos sociales y síntomas musculoesqueléticos. Para el análisis estadístico se utilizó la correlación de Spearman. Hubo predominio de SB en la muestra (65,2%). Se observaron correlaciones significativas entre los aspectos sociales y la incredulidad (p=0.016; r=-0.283), la eficacia acadêmica (p=<0.001; r=-0.399) y síntomas depresivos (p=<0.001; r=-0.547), así como entre la salud general y los síntomas depresivos (p=0.012; r=-0.295). Establecer este tipo de medidas permite planificar acciones dirigidas a la asistencia estudiantil, priorizar intervenciones y prácticas que colaboren con la promoción de la salud en el ámbito universitario.

Introducción. El efecto de las políticas para el mejoramiento del bienestar de los residentes, en términos de desgaste profesional y compromiso laboral, es controversial y su resultado tras la implementación de la "ley de residentes" (1917/2018) en Colombia es desconocido. Este estudio explora el efecto de esta ley en médicos residentes de cirugía colombianos. Métodos. Estudio de métodos mixtos secuencial explicativo. Inicialmente, se invitó a todos los residentes de cirugía del país a autodiligenciar los cuestionarios UWES-17 y MBI-HSS para evaluar el compromiso laboral (vigor, dedicación y absorción) y desgaste profesional (agotamiento emocional, despersonalización y baja realización personal) antes (2019) y después (2022) de la implementación de la ley. Se probaron diferentes hipótesis mediante modelos de ecuaciones estructurales. Los resultados fueron explorados con cirujanos mediante grupos focales. La información cualitativa fue analizada manualmente y por inteligencia artificial, y reportada en temas principales. Resultados. Participaron en el estudio 400 residentes. La tasa de desgaste profesional fue de 24,8 % antes y 15,8 % después (p=0,032). El análisis de ecuaciones estructurales confirmó que el agotamiento emocional sobre el desgaste profesional fue menor en 2022 (p=0,022). No se identificaron cambios significativos en el compromiso laboral. La principal explicación fue atribuida a los beneficios económicos de la ley. Conclusión. La tasa de desgaste profesional en médicos residentes de cirugía colombianos se redujo significativamente tras la implementación de la "ley de residentes". Estos hallazgos tienen implicaciones para la practica y el mejoramiento de la calidad de la educación.


Introduction. The effect of policies to improve residents' well-being, in terms of professional burnout and work commitment is controversial, and its result after the implementation of the "residents' law" (1917/2018) in Colombia is unknown. This study explores the effect of this law on Colombian surgical residents. Methods. Explanatory sequential mixed methods study. Initially, all surgical residents in the country were invited to self-complete the UWES-17 and MBI-HSS questionnaires to evaluate work commitment (vigor, dedication, and absorption) and professional burnout (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and low personal accomplishment) before (2019) and after (2022) the implementation of the law. Different hypotheses were tested using structural equation models. The results were explored with surgeons through focus groups. Qualitative information was analyzed manually and by artificial intelligence, and reported into main themes. Results. 400 residents participated in the study. Burnout rates were 24.8% before and 15.8% after (p=0.032). The structural equations analysis confirmed that emotional exhaustion over professional burnout was lower in 2022 (p=0.022). No significant changes in work commitment were identified. The main explanation was attributed to the economic benefits of the law. Conclusion. The burnout rate in Colombian surgical residents was significantly reduced after the implementation of the "residents' law". These findings have implications for practice and improving the quality of education

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: There is a significant impact of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) on individuals of all ages, professions, and fields from various countries worldwide, leading to a negative impact on quality of life and overall health outcomes. The study was conducted to investigate the association between Burnout syndrome (BS) and MSDs among physiotherapists in Saudi Arabia. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out. Physiotherapists of either gender and with no known co-morbidities and who were not suffering from recent injuries and accidents were included in the study. The Copenhagen Burnout Inventory was used to determine the level of burnout. Musculoskeletal disorders were analyzed using the Standardized Nordic Questionnaire (NMQ). The chi-square test was used to observe the association between two categorical variables and a p-value <0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. RESULTS: A total of 133 participants were recruited and it was observed that 70 (53%) participants had low burnout levels (BoL). It was revealed that 65 (49%) had trouble in the neck and visited a physician clinic, 47 (35%) had trouble in the lower back during the last 12 months, 60 (45%) had trouble in the upper back during the last 12 months that prevented the normal activity and 13 (9.8%) participants had trouble in the shoulders during the last 7 days. History of chronic disease, education, practice setting, and smoking status with Burnout level was statistically significant. Trouble in the upper back, elbow, wrist/hands, hips/thighs, ankle/feet, and neck were also found to be significant. CONCLUSION: The outcomes revealed that a few demographic factors such as education, practice setting, smoking status, and chronic disease history were significantly associated with BS. Furthermore, it was observed that MSD had a significant impact on BoL.

BACKGROUND: This study introduced Zentangle®, which involves drawing simple, repetitive lines and shapes to create patterns, as a tool to promote wellness for oncology nurses in a clinical practice setting. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine whether Zentangle used as a meditative activity in an acute time frame decreased stress, fatigue, and burnout while increasing professional quality of life and well-being in oncology nurses. METHODS: Twenty-six oncology nurses participated in a two-hour Zentangle class and received materials to complete art over four weeks. The Perceived Stress Scale, the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale, the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System-29, and the Professional Quality of Life measure were administered at selected periods. Twenty-four participants completed the study. FINDINGS: Nurses' well-being, socialization, anxiety, fatigue, secondary traumatic stress levels, and stress levels improved significantly. Most participants noted they would continue using Zentangle after the study. Zentangle is another tool to advance nurses' wellness by encouraging self-care.

BACKGROUND: The availability of paid parental leave is an important factor for retention and wellness. The experiences of head and neck surgeons with parental leave have never been reported. METHODS: A survey was electronically distributed to head and neck subspecialty surgeons in the United States. Responses were collected and analyzed. RESULTS: Male surgeons had more children and took significantly less parental leave than women. Thirty percent of respondents reported that parental leave negatively impacted compensation, and 14% reported a delay in promotion due to leave, which impacted women more than men. The vast majority reported they are happy or neutral about covering those on leave. Most respondents utilized paid childcare, and approximately one quarter of respondents spending 11%-20% of their income on childcare. CONCLUSIONS: This study illuminates the current disparities regarding parental leave-taking within the subspecialty of head and neck surgery in the United States. Women surgeons are more likely to be impacted professionally and financially.

Burnout and its negative sequelae are a persistent problem in gynecologic oncology, threatening the health of our physician workforce. Individual-level interventions such as stress management training, physical activity, and sleep hygiene only partially address this widespread, systemic crisis rooted in the extended work hours and stressful situations associated with gynecologic oncology practice. There is an urgent need for systematic, institution-level changes to allow gynecologic oncologists to continue the crucial work of caring for people with gynecologic cancer. We present recommendations for institution-level changes which are grounded in the framework presented by the National Plan for Health Workforce Well-Being by the National Academy of Medicine. These are aimed at facilitating gynecologic oncologists' well-being and reduction of burnout. Recommendations include efforts to create a more positive and inclusive work environment, decrease administrative barriers, promote mental health, optimize electronic medical record use, and support a diverse workforce. Implementation and regular evaluation of these interventions, with specific attention to at-risk groups, is an important next step.

BACKGROUND: Palliative care and oncology generate a risk of burnout and psychological distress in professionals. The purpose of this study is to identify both psychopathological and positive factors related to mental health at work. It aims (i) to explore the extent to which these professionals are confronted with suffering, illness, and death; and to explore the prevalence of psychological distress and/or burnout, (ii) to identify potential determinants of burnout and psychological wellbeing at work, (iii) to develop an integrative model of mental health; and to identify frequency and impact of confrontations with death, and (iv) to identify profiles of professionals are at risk of developing a mental health disorder or, conversely, characterized by wellbeing. METHODS: A cross-sectional questionnaire study was conducted in palliative care and oncology evaluating confrontations with death, coping, burnout, psychological distress, personality, self-esteem, well-being and meaning at work. Regressions, clustering, and structural equation modeling analyses were performed. RESULTS: 109 professionals participated (58% from oncology and 42% from palliative care), of which 79% were female, and 65% were between 30 and 49 years old. Aim i: 30% witnessed an intolerable suffering at least 9 times a month, 45% reported moderate to high levels of burnout, 39% suffered from anxiety and 11% from depression. Aim ii: the determinants of burnout were the personality traits conscientiousness and neuroticism, low meaning of work, and low wellbeing (R2 = 0.44). The determinants of wellbeing were work meaning, depersonalization, self-esteem, fulfillment and low emotional exhaustion (R2 = 0.71). Aim iii: the integrative model included both well-being (self-esteem, conscientiousness) and psychopathology (neuroticism, anxiety) parameters, and strongly satisfied the standard SEM goodness of fit indices (e.g., CFI, IFI, and TLI ≥ 0.95). Aim iv: three profiles were identified: (a) a "distressed profile" with a majority of professionals at the patient's bedside, (b) a "disengaged profile" with professionals working as second-line consultants, (c) a "wellbeing profile" contains profiles of caregivers insensitive to psychological distress and with a high level of positive Impact of confrontation on different areas of their lives. CONCLUSIONS: An integrative approach is essential to understand the full range of mental health issues for professionals. Meaning of work is a key factor in professional interventions that should primarily affect front-line professionals with limited experience.

BACKGROUND: Emotional intelligence (EI) can decrease physician burnout. EI and burnout were assessed in surgical residents through participation in Patient-Centric Resident Conferences (PCRCs), which incorporated patients in resident education. We hypothesized PCRCs would improve EI and reduce burnout. METHODS: This was a single institution study of General Surgery residents from 2018 to 2019. Residents participated in standard didactic conferences and PCRCs. The Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire-Short Form (TEIQue-SF) survey and an ACGME burnout survey were administered at three time points. RESULTS: Higher EI scores correlated with lower burnout scores over three survey distributions (R2 0.35, 0.39, and 0.68, respectively). EI and burnout scores did not change significantly over time. EI and burnout were not associated with conference attendance, meaning in work, or satisfaction with teaching. CONCLUSIONS: General Surgery resident EI and burnout scores were inversely correlated. Previously, PCRCs were shown to be associated with increased resident meaning in work. The current study demonstrates PCRCs did not have a significant impact on measures of resident EI or burnout. Further research is needed for EI and burnout in surgery.
